Coalition government scrap Home Information Packs (HIPS)

The Government has announced the suspension of Home Information Packs with immediate effect from 21 May 2010. Home Information Packs, introduced in 2007 for properties in England and Wales, was a requirement for sellers to have in order to sell their property. Homes marketed for sale on or after 21 May 2010 will no longer require a Home Information Pack

Suspending HIPs will reduce the cost of selling a home, remove a layer of regulation from the process and provide a welcome help to the housing market during the recovery. It will also mean a saving for consumers to the tune of £870m over ten years, giving sellers more money in their pocket to spend in the wider economy.

The National Association Of Estate Agents have welcomed the news and have said "It will be greeted enthusiastically by both the housing market and house buyers, It is also good news for sellers. They no longer need to shell out hundreds of pounds for a piece of pointless regulation that benefits no one."
